In
October 2007, 155 British Athletes with learning disabilities and 50
coaches, travelled to China to represent Great Britain at the Special
Olympics World Summer Games. Over
7,000 athletes from 160 countries took part in 21 different sports,
making it by far the biggest disability sporting event in the World
that year.
The
British squad competed in 16 different sports including: Aquatics, Athletics,
Badminton, Basketball, Cycling, Equestrian, Football, Golf, Gymnastics,
Judo, Kayaking, Power lifting, Sailing, Table Tennis, Ten Pin Bowling
and Tennis.
YHSO
had 9 athletes in the GB squad including 3 footballers. The region also
had four of its volunteers in the coaching/management team.
This
was a truly spectacular event and the opening ceremony with its 110,000
attendence ensured that this this would live in our memories for many
years to come.
